Help Your Pet Adjust to Travel-Related Stress

Help Your Pet Adjust to Travel-Related Stress

If you are getting ready to travel with your pet, it's important to prepare yourself and your pet ahead of time. Since travel can be stressful for your pet, it's a great idea to address this before you pack your bags. At Southwest Veterinary Hospital PC, we offer the services you need to get ready for your next trip.

Vaccinations

Before you travel, you'll need to be sure your pet is up to date on vaccinations. You will probably need a record of your pet's vaccines, particularly if you plan to fly. If it's time for a rabies vaccine, you should get it at least 30 days before you plan to travel. This gives the vaccine time to take effect.

Medication Refills

If your pet is taking any medications, you'll need to make sure that you have enough medication for the duration of your trip. Getting your pet's medicine refilled while traveling can be stressful for you, and can affect your pet's health if a dose is missed.

Grooming

It's a great idea to get your pet groomed before you travel as well. Getting your pet’s nails clipped and coats cleaned can make him more comfortable on the trip.

Addressing Behavioral Concerns

If it's your pet's first time traveling, you won't know exactly how he will react. However, if your pet is prone to anxiety or hyperactivity, you can expect him to have behavioral issues when traveling. If you are aware of the sources of your pet's travel stress, you can manage it more effectively.

Behavioral counseling can help you get your pet ready for the trip. This may include getting them used to a pet carrier, and teaching them to obey basic commands. If your pet has severe anxiety, or you are concerned about his reaction to your trip, your vet may recommend prescription medication to help him relax.

In addition, dietary counseling can help you manage your pet's anxiety and maintain his overall health.
