Vaccines FAQs

Your pets' health and longevity will be highly dependent on the care you give them. At Southwest Veterinary Hospital, serving Littleton, OH, and the surrounding areas, we make it our goal to educate pet owners on all the ways they can improve the health and wellness of their pets. One of the best things you can do to protect your pet is to make sure its vaccines are up-to-date. Following are the answers to several questions our veterinarian frequently receives regarding vaccines.

Are Vaccines Necessary?

Animals are exposed to many more types of viruses and diseases than humans are. This is especially true for animals that live outside. As animals interact with their environment and with other animals, they are being exposed to pathogens that could drastically affect their health. Some of these pathogens could also affect the health of you and your family as well.

Veterinarians have spent decades determining which types of pathogens pose the most risk to animals. Vaccines have been developed, tested, and used safely for many years to combat these pathogens. The result is that communities now have much healthier animals. This applies to both pets and farm animals. Proper vaccination is the only way to avoid many of the diseases that threaten your animal.

Which Vaccines Does My Pet Need?

Vaccinations vary greatly from species to species. You must schedule an appointment with a veterinarian at our animal hospital to discuss which vaccines your pet needs. You will be able to ask the doctor any questions you may have and have a chance to discuss any concerns. Vaccines are most effective when they are administered on a regular schedule. Skipping vaccinations will cause a lapse in your animal's protection.
